Spine Neurosurgery

The department of Spine neurosurgery of Tiantan Hospital was established in 1962. It is one of the first centers for spinal cord diseases in China. Our department has 7 senior doctors, 2 associate senior doctors, and 3 attending or resident doctors. Annual number of operations exceeds 1200.

Specialties covers a wide range of diseases: ①Tumors of the spinal cord and nerves, e.g. ependymomas, schwannomas, spinal meningiomas, teratomas, and metastatic tumors, etc. We especially focus on the surgical treatment and Individualized comprehensive therapy of spinal gliomas based on genotyping; ②Neurotube malformations, e.g. tethered cord syndrome, atlantoaxial dislocation, sacral canal cyst, chiari malformation, syringomyelia, etc.; ③Degenerative diseases of the spine, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) of cervical disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), etc.; ④Vascular diseases of the spinal cord, e.g. spinal cavernous malformation, dural arteriovenous fistula, arteriovenous malformation, etc.; ⑤Neuromodulation of functional diseases of the spinal cord, e.g. intractable spinal pain, secondary dystonia, neurogenic bladder or rectum, etc. In addition, clinical trials of new therapies are being carried out, such as functional reconstruction of spinal cord injury.

The department of spinal neurosurgery has always valued the concept of minimal invasive surgery, particularly the protection of spinal stability. Minimally invasive spinal channel system, spinal endoscopes are some examples of frequently used technologies. Treatments with which has shown satisfying results both domestically and internationally. The department was awarded the title of "2021 National Youth Civilization Unit"

The Department of spinal neurosurgery working with the "National Clinical Research Center for Neurological Diseases" and the "National Quality Control Center for Neurological Diseases", is dedicated to the research of new concepts, innovations and technologies related to spinal diseases. Currently, it has 4 doctoral supervisors and 4 master supervisors, undertaking a number of national or provincial projects. More than 50 SCI papers were published in the past decade, with total IF of more than 300.
