Neurosurgical Oncology Ward 1

　　The Neurosurgical Oncology Ward 1 is the former Neurosurgical Ward 7 (Skull Base Brainstem Tumor Ward). It was founded by academician Zhongcheng Wang and Professor Junting Zhang in 1993, and is the first neurosurgical ward specializing in skull base in China. Under the leadership of Prof. Junting Zhang, Prof. Liwei Zhang, Prof. Zhen Wu and other discipline leaders, all team members have overcome difficulties, forged ahead and innovated. After more than 20 years of development, the skull base and brainstem specialties team has gradually broken through barriers of treating skull base and brainstem diseases. The innovative results that keep emerging have attracted the attention of domestic and foreign colleagues. As one of the first key disciplines of Tiantan Hospital and the largest neurosurgical center for skull base and brainstem diseases in China with international influence, the neuro-oncology ward has completed more than 1400 complex surgeries annually, and has accumulated clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of brainstem glioma, brainstem cavernous vascular malformation, skull base chordoma, rock oblique meningioma, jugular foramen area and occipital foramen area tumors, etc. The efficacy is international leading.

　　Led by Director Wu Zhen and Deputy Director Wang Liang, the Neurosurgical Oncology Ward 1 has followed the footsteps of Academician Wang Zhongcheng and Professor Zhang Junting, who developed a range of advanced and practical microsurgical techniques. They have creatively combined various cutting-edge technologies such as neuroendoscopy, neuronavigation, multimodal image fusion, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, artificial intelligence, etc., aiming to remove the tumor completely for every patient without compromising their neurological function.

　　The Neurosurgical Oncology Ward 1 has always valued the balanced and mutual advancement of clinical practice, scientific research and teaching. The department currently has 4 doctoral advisors, 2 postdoctoral co-advisors and 2 master’s advisors, with a total research funding of over 25 million yuan. In recent years, we have published more than 100 academic papers in top international journals of life sciences such as Nature Genetics, Nature Cancer, Acta Neuropathologica, Nature Communications, Advanced Science, as well as top professional journals of neurosurgery such as Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, and well-known core journals such as Chinese Journal of Neurosurgery. In recent years, Prof. Junting Zhang, Prof. Liwei Zhang and Prof. Wu Zhen have presided over dozens of projects including the 12th Five-Year Plan, 973, 863, National Nature, Beijing Nature and other provincial and ministerial projects. They have been awarded the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, and the China Medical Science and Technology Award. The "Zhang Junting Studio" awarded by Beijing Municipal Federation Unions and Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission is located in the Neurosurgical Oncology Ward 1.
