Department of Pain Management

Professor Enzhen Wang, an expert in anesthesiology and pain management, founded the Department of pain management at Beijing Tiantan Hospital in the 1990s. This was the first pain clinic to provide services such as diagnosis and treatment of various acute and chronic pain conditions at a major hospital. At present, there are 3 chief physicians, 2 deputy chief physicians, 2 attending doctors and 1 head nurse in the department of pain management. At present, the department performs a variety of complex, refractory pain diagnosis and treatment. Minimally invasive treatment of trigeminal nerve, intra-articular injection for knee osteoarthritis and interventional treatment of cervical and lumbar intervertebral discs are routinely performed as well.

Scope of treatment

1. Head and face pain: trigeminal neuralgia, migraine, cluster headache, cervicogenic headache, muscular tension headache, post-traumatic headache, etc.

2. Cervical and lumbar pain: cervical and lumbar discogenic pain,, lumbar spinal nerves syndrome, etc.

3. Neuropathic pain: postherpetic neuralgia, phantom limb pain, stump pain, diabetic peripheral neuropathy and complex regional pain syndrome, etc.

4. Cancer pain: comprehensive treatment of cancer pain, intrathecal analgesia, patient-controlled analgesia.

5. Bone, joint, soft tissue pain: degenerative osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder, osteoarthritis, achalasia, temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome, soft tissue pain, etc.

6. Various other types of pain.
