Department of Cardiac surgery

The department of cardiac surgery, Centre of Cardiovascular Diseases at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, is one of the earliest units in China to perform open-heart surgery. Currently, it boasts a mature system for surgical procedures, anesthesia, cardiopulmonary bypass, postoperative intensive care, and a highly skilled cardiovascular surgical team. The department can independently perform coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, heart valve replacement surgery, congenital heart disease surgery, aortic surgery, and cardiac tumor surgery. Minimally invasive procedures include minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass surgery, minimally invasive heart valve replacement, minimally invasive congenital heart disease surgery, surgical radiofrequency ablation, video-assisted thoracoscopic left atrial appendage clipping surgery, thoracic endovascular aortic repair, transcatheter aortic valve implantation, mitral clip, and transcatheter closure of congenital heart defects.

The department of cardiac surgery collaborates closely with the department neurology, department of neurosurgery, and department of ultrasound diagnostic at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, leveraging the hospital's resources to actively carry out joint diagnosis and treatment of the Heart-Brain comorbidities. The department of cardiac surgery has extensive experience in simultaneous treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and coronary heart diseases, as well as comprehensive management of cardioembolic stroke. In this way, procedures like carotid endarterectomy combined with coronary artery bypass grafting, surgical radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation, and video-assisted thoracoscopic left atrial appendage clipping have become technical specialties of the department of cardiac surgery.

This team holds a significant academic position among their peers in China. As an important clinical teaching and training base for Capital Medical University, the department of cardiac surgery also has authorization to confer master's and doctoral degrees, contributing to the development of highly skilled professionals in clinical, teaching, and research fields.
