The department of Cardiology and Macrovascular disease of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, which includes cardiology department, department of cardiac surgery and coronary care unit. As a professional team, our center specializes in the diagnosing and treatment of patients with cerebro-cardiac co-morbidities, coronary heart disease, arrhythmia, structural heart disease, valve disease, hypertension, heart failure, aortic disease, and cardiac emergencies. In addition to extensive clinical work, our center also carries out in-depth clinical research and teaching. The center adheres to the hospital's philosophy of "strong specialties, large comprehensive" and insists on the mode of "patient-centered and disease-oriented" treatment and optimizes the allocation of disciplinary resources, provides high-level "one-stop" medical services for patients with brain and heart diseases.

1 Cardiology Department:

The department of Cardiology and Macrovascular disease is currently the only diagnosis and treatment center for brain and heart co-morbidities simultaneously in China. It includes a department for brain and heart co-morbidities, a department for coronary heart disease, a department for cardiac electrophysiology, a department for structural heart disease and a department for emergency cardiac critical care unit and a department for non-invasive cardiac examination. The annual average number of patients who received treatment in cardiovascular medicine outpatient clinics is over 80,000. The cardiology department which mainly treats various cardiovascular diseases has more than 1,200 discharges on average.

In clinical work, the cardiology department carries out many invasive techniques, including coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), cardiac electrophysiology, pacing therapy, left atrial appendage occlusion, and patent foramen ovale occlusion. The interventional level of PCI in our department is at the top level in China under the leading of Prof. Jin Zening. The center has been continuously carrying out minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of structural heart disease for many years, leading interventional technology for congenital heart disease in China. The center has actively collaborated with the Department of Neurology to improve the survival rate and quality of life of patients with stroke combined with atrial fibrillation. Professor Zening Jin has pioneered and actively carried out left heart ear occlusion and interventional occlusion of the atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale to reduce the incidence of cardiogenic stroke in some patients.

The cardiology department undertakes to teach medical English, diagnostics, and internal medicine-related content in the medical and dental departments as well as the international relations college of Capital Medical University. There are 5 supervisors for master and doctoral students and there are 5 students graduated with doctor’s degree and nearly 20 graduated with master’s degree. It is also the training base for Beijing's internal medicine and cardiovascular medicine residents. In addition to clinical work, the department also undertakes a lot of teaching work including continuing education for doctors, residents, and hospital staff.

In terms of scientific research, the cardiology department currently has many research projects at the provincial and ministerial levels and the department has cooperated with other departments to carry out various inter-disciplinary research and published research papers. It also has a high level of scientific research in various fields such as diagnosis and treatment in coronary heart disease, brain-heart syndrome, cardiac-renal syndrome, and heart failure.

In terms of prevention, the cardiology department cooperates with social organizations to carry out community and counterpart support programs, carries out health education programs such as health educational classes, and has a deep clinical foundation in the primary prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, chronic disease management and other fields.

2. Cardiac Surgery:

The Cardiac surgery department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, is one of China's early units for open heart surgery. It has a mature system of surgery, anesthesia, extracorporeal circulation, postoperative intensive care, and a skilled cardiac surgery team. The Department of Cardiac Surgery can independently perform coronary artery bypass surgery, extracorporeal circulation coronary artery bypass surgery, small incision coronary artery bypass surgery, bypass plus valve replacement surgery, coronary revascularization hybrid surgery; various common precordial diseases; mitral valve, aortic valve single valve and double valve replacement and cardiomyopathy left ventricular outflow tract stenosis sparing surgery; ascending aortic aneurysm with valve prosthesis replacement (Bentall surgery), the replacement of type I aortic coarctation with half arch and modified elephant trunk surgery.

Relying on the advantageous resources of the Department of Neurology of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, the Department of Cardiac Surgery has cooperated with the Department of Neurology, Department of Neurosurgery, Department of Neuroradiology, and Department of Ultrasound Diagnosis to carry out "heart-brain treatment actively." As a result, the department has rich experience in the simultaneous treatment of carotid artery stenosis combined with coronary artery lesions, the management of intracranial aneurysms combined with complex coronary artery lesions, and the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of cardiogenic strokes. In addition, carotid endarterectomy combined with coronary artery bypass graft hybrid surgery, atrial fibrillation surgical radiofrequency ablation surgery, and thoracoscopy-assisted left auricular clamping surgery has become the technical features of the department.

The team has an academic reputation among its domestic counterparts. As a critical clinical teaching and training base of Capital Medical University, the Department of Cardiac Surgery has both master's degree and doctoral degree authorization points and has cultivated composite talents with excellent clinical, teaching, and research skills for the medical front of the capital.

At present, the department has advanced equipments, such as radiofrequency ablation instruments, intra-cardiac electrophysiological examination instruments, pacemaker programming control instruments, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor, 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiogram monitors, non-invasive cardiac function test, intelligent stress test machine, multi-functional ventilator, multi-functional cardiac defibrillator, multi-functional heart monitor, remote heart monitor, central oxygen supply device, upright tilt test, etc., which provide reliable guarantee for high-quality medical services.

Human resources

Currently, there are 33 physicians in our team. Seven of them are chief physicians, 13 are deputy chief physicians, and 11 are attendings. Among them, 7 have doctoral degree, 16 have master's degree, and 10 have undergraduate degrees.
