Department of Thoracic Surgery

The Department of Thoracic Surgery of Beijing Tiantan Hospital was founded in 1978. After more than 40 years of development, the types of clinical operations have been rapidly improved, and some treatments have gradually formed their treatment characteristics. 2019, the hospital introduced Director Wei Bo to become the head of the department and the leader of the discipline, leading Tiantan Hospital Thoracic Surgery Department to continue its development, and soon there were new achievements in medical, teaching, and research.

In terms of clinical work, in response to the current social situation, lung cancer incidence and mortality rates are rapidly rising in Beijing, the whole country, and the world. The team focuses on developing lung cancer surgical treatment and comprehensive treatment (including extensive treatment of brain metastasis of lung cancer) and has achieved some results. Others are surgical treatment of esophageal cancer, surgical treatment of cervicothoracic junction tumor, surgical treatment of mediastinal tumor, surgical treatment of myasthenia gravis, and chest trauma salvage, with annual surgical volume rapidly increasing to 500 units. Thoracic Surgery Department strictly follows the clinical treatment standard to formulate the treatment plan for patients, with precise anatomical level and standardized operation, taking into account the four principles of safety, curative, functional, and minimally invasive surgery, with good surgical results.

Regarding teaching work, we established a doctoral oncology training site (thoracic surgery direction) at Capital Medical University and started recruiting postgraduate students. At present, there are many master's students in the program.

Regarding scientific research, the team has published 3 SCI papers this year. In addition, it has been awarded the National Natural Science Foundation of China project entitled "Rapid detection of EGFR mutations in lung cancer by electrochemical sensors."

1. Lung cancer surgery and comprehensive treatment: At present, our department routinely performs general lung cancer surgery and complicated lung cancer surgery and also takes into account the research of comprehensive treatment of brain metastasis of lung cancer;

2. Esophageal cancer surgical treatment: the team routinely performs radical esophageal cancer surgery and considers complex high cervical esophageal cancer with total esophageal and total laryngeal resection of the stomach instead of the esophagus.

3. Surgical treatment of difficult cervicothoracic junction tumor: for the complex anatomical structure of cervicothoracic junction, which often involves large blood vessels, esophagus, trachea, and other important organs, the department hosts multidisciplinary joint surgical treatment with satisfactory results.

4. Surgical treatment of myasthenia gravis: Relying on the advantages of the neuroscience of the hospital, the team carries out joint diagnosis and treatment of myasthenia gravis with the Department of Neurology and carries out surgical treatment of myasthenia gravis, which makes the whole treatment of myasthenia gravis more systematic, complete, and efficacy.

5. Thoracic trauma: the team routinely carries out internal fixation of rib fractures early after injury to achieve rapid recovery.
