Beijing Tiantan Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University

The neurosurgical department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University (hereinafter referred as "Beijing Tiantan Hospital") was established in 1982, and the first director of the department was Academician Wang Zhongcheng. After rapid development of more than 40 years, the department has become a renowned center for neurosurgical treatment, scientific research and medical education, domestically as well as internationally.

In 2018, a newly built Beijing Tiantan Hospital officially operated in Huaxiang area, Fengtai District. Development of neurosurgical department entered into a fast-growing stage. In August 2022, the Neurosurgical department was officially renamed as Neurosurgical Center. Professor Jiang Tao has been holding the post of director of the center since then.

The largest and most comprehensive neurosurgical center in China

At present, the Neurosurgical Center includes 19 neurosurgical units with nearly 600 open beds. Divided by sub-specialty and therapeutic spectrum, the Center covers 3 cerebrovascular disease units (skilled in various craniotomy approaches and endovascular interventional therapy), 7 neurosurgical oncology units (separated by disease spectrum such as brain stem and skull base tumors, pituitary center, supratentorial/infratentorial tumors, glioma center, intra- and extracranial communicating lesions), pediatric neurosurgery, neurotrauma, spinal neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, peripheral neurosurgery and neurosurgical disorders of consciousness treatment unit. Each unit represents distinctive characteristics and takes the leading position in diagnosis and treatment in China.

Neurosurgical Center is equipped with 3 hybrid operating rooms, 1 intraoperative magnetic resonance operating room and more than 20 professional neurosurgical operating rooms. Nearly 23,000 operations (including endovascular interventional operations) were performed in 2022. The mortality rate of elective surgery was 0.2%, which reached the international advanced level. In the " Medical specialty reputation ranking list" released by Fudan University Management Institute, Neurosurgical Center has topped the ranking of neurosurgery for 10 consecutive years. We shall devoted serving patients wholeheartedly.

Leading and world-renowned neurosurgical research center in China

In recent years, the scientific research achievements of the Center have shown an increasing trend year by year in terms of quantity and quality. In 2022, the center has been approved 28 national research project or funds, 16 provincial and ministerial level projects, with a total on-going funding of more than 300 million RMB (more than 42 million US dollars). In the recently released ranking of the scientific and technological value of China’s hospitals, the Neurosurgical Center has ranked first for the last seven consecutive years.

Over the years, with the strong support of research platforms such as the National Medical Center for Neurological Diseases, the National Clinical Research Center for Neurological Diseases, the National Center for Medical Quality Control for Neurological Diseases and the Beijing Institute of Neurosurgery, the Center has carried out in-depth research in various fields. So far the Center has won 1 first prize and 6 second prizes of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, and more than 100 provincial and ministerial awards for science and technology.

Since 2022, Beijing Tiantan Hospital has promoted the "integration of Neurosurgical Center and Beijing Institute of Neurosurgery". Professor Jiang Tao has served as the director of the Center and the Beijing Institute of Neurosurgery as well. The integration will optimize resources distribution of the Center and the Beijing Institute of Neurosurgery, and certainly will further boost the Center to bravely scale new heights of medical research.

Large-scale education center for outstanding talents of neurosurgery in China

Academician Wang Zhongcheng had carried out pioneering clinical treatment and basic research on brain stem lesions and intraspinal cord tumors in Beijing Tiantan Hospital in 1980s and 90s. He had made theoretical conclusions on "plasticity of brain stem and spinal cord", " pre-adaptation of spinal ischemia ", "Breakthrough phenomenon of normal perfusion pressure in the medulla oblongata after operation of large hemangioblastoma", and has gained global reputation in neurosurgical society. For his outstanding contributions to the development of neurosurgery in China, Academician Wang Zhongcheng won the "National Top Science and Technology Award" in 2008, which has been the highest award received by the domestic neurosurgery community so far.

Academician Zhao Jizong has made unique contributions in the clinical and basic research of cerebrovascular diseases and minimally invasive neurosurgery. With the "Mechanism research on formation and rupture of cerebrovascular malformations and its surgical treatment " and "Minimally invasive neurosurgery basis and clinical application of cognitive function protection in brain surgery", Academician Zhao Jizong won the second prize of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology twice, and led the way of the transformation to "Minimally invasive neurosurgery era".

Thanks to the efforts of Academician Wang Zhongcheng, Academician Zhao Jizong and a number of neurosurgery experts over the years, the Center has formulated a talent neurosurgical team. The Center enrolls nearly 100 post-doctoral and postgraduate students every year. As the neuroscience training cooperation center of the World Health Organization and the World Federation of Neurosurgery in China, we has built the Wang Zhongcheng Microneurosurgery Training Center, and holds several training courses on microscopy and endoscopy every year. In addition, the Center is also responsible for the standardized training base and specialist training base of neurosurgery residents in Beijing, and has trained nearly 100 qualified students annually.
